Yeah, that's just the gas....

But you are on the right track. If you are confident enough to tackle all this work, then you are halfway there. Get your half decent mig welder and beg/borrow/ steal some old door skins/wings etc from your local crash repair shop, take them home and practice your mig-welding skills. Do remember, for a successful weld, REMOVE all the paint from where you plan to weld, INCLUDING all the crud and sealants from the underside. if you dont do this, the heat from the weld will melt old paint & sealants and the fumes etc from these will often come up into the hot weld-pool of your weld and ruin it. Cleanliness is everything! The sound of a good weld crackling though metal will be music to your ears, believe me!
I would also suggest that that you dont get tempted into doing a 'bit here and there' on the van. That's the quickest way to loose faith in the job. Stick to doing one part repair at a time. Do the repair, grind, it back, etc, get it nice and put some primer on it, then go to the next bit, and so on. To see one completely finished repair, done well, etc will do wonders for your self-esteem, believe me .
It WILL take time, IT is SOUL DESTROYING at times, BUT it will come right in the end if you have patience and determination.
