Al told me that his van has never gone as fast as it did when you were towing him along that single track road

S'funny, i've never broken down as much in one type of vehicle as i have with a syncro. But as per your photo, i'm still smiling in the recovery truck
Hope it's a cheap fix, if it's not, are you gonna join the AFN club

Aidan you not supposed to be hearing this.
dont know whats wrong yet but i suspect pistons or rings. engine is clearly running on 3 cyls excessive crankcase pressure loads of oil in the inlet side and cooling system is all good. egt`s were good oil and water temp were all good.
boost was not.
@ lloydy after this very likely to go back to standard afn and vnt15.

Re: Math question tdi + 2 bar =
you need a AAZ, quite happy at 1.5 bar...
*now I've said that, I'll await my engine going pop.

Bad luck mate
Recon you'll be right on the damage.
Stronger pistons in the AFN might be a better bet.

Re: Math question tdi + 2 bar =
power does indeed corrupt nick. think it may have held together at 1.5 bar but its been spiking to 1.8 / 2.0 bar occasionally. i just missed it this time normallly backing off and then applying the throttle was enough to steady it.
i didn`t use any 1z bits in this build so it had the supposedly had all the stronger stuff.
if anyone knows the ingrediants for a tdi that can handle 2.0 bar reliably i`d be glad of the info. save me some research time as i`ll be a bit busy being covered in oil.
lee.

Lee, when we spoke the other day IIRC you said you had a GT1749vb and an AHU (wastegate) ECU ?? Maybe I misunderstood, but I was wondering how the turbo boost was being controlled ?
If there was a problem there I wouldn't be too hasty to point the finger at pistons/rings/block being deficient, they are known to be good for 200hp + in a properly set up engine I think.

If the engine is an easy fix, one of these might help,
as you obviously have more than enough power to give a little back.
http://www.stackltd.com/instruments_pro_control.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
hook up one of these to back off the fuel for you
and give a visual red warning before it goes critical,
or for the time being, use the RED face
at your required max boost.
and hook up the Gauge earth s/w circuit, to a warning buzzer(neg,
or maybe a relay into the fuel stop line) they switch incredibly quickly and you cant miss seeing the gauge face turn ANGREY RED, it frightens the pants off you, but better to know.
I've got the EGT gauge, expensive but effective.
What turbo you running?
