There was defiantly fuel in the water!

When you opened the water and cooling bottles, there was a very very strong smell of fuel. Dipping a finger in and a quick smell/taste confirmed this. I was surprised too - so I got the (first) garage to check and they agreed. They also hinted that someone in the past had done a very poor job when working inside the engine.
