This is a preview of how it's coming on - 2 coats of cream and 2 coats of red. The last coat of red was put on last night and the cream was a week ago - neither are flatted/prepped for the next coat as yet but it's looking good and the red is reeeet shiney!

ive got the same cream over red colour scheme which is looking tired and she needs a fair bit of cosmetics soon. I was worried I wouldnt be able to get similar colours, glad I can get similar in rustoleum

I used standard RAL 3000 and RAL1015 BTW

The cream is a fair bit lighter than the original cream and the red on mine is somewhat duller than the Rustoleum - that said my van was originally brown on the bottom half!

Very pleased for you Doug. If you've mastered it, you may not need to flat or finish. If the mix is right and the temperature just so, it comes up beautifully.

Am moving onto the poptop now - once that's done I'll do the final flat and top coats on the cream/red lower parts

Hi everybody,

I was told about this thread from somebody on the brickyard forum and it looks like a very good idea and i'm going to buy the dvd and have a go at painting my vw lt35. I'm toying with the idea of painting it matt black not a clour for everybody I know but to save me reading the whole thread can anybody help me with a few points? Can you get a matt black colour and has anybody used it before? As its a matt colour can you get away with not flattening the paint as much between coats and with the final finishing? Thank you in advance for any replies.

Yes, Rustoleum.co.uk can supply matt black although I'd still spend as much time on prep as you can. Matt does hide imperfections to a certain extent but theres no substitute for good preparation - a dent is a dent. As for between coats, providing you don't paint in hot conditions or have the paint too thick, you may not need to flat back between coats. Heres one painted in matt using a gun, but you get the idea

Thank you for the quick reply. A couple more quick questions if you don't mind, you say not to paint it in hot conditions but if it's to cold conditions will the paint could bloom? Also is it ok to go straight on pre-painted fibreglass roofs and bumpers without any plastic primer?

Colder conditions seem to be less of an issue with some members painting as late as November. Conditions right now (if painting outside) are perfect except for the very real problem of bugs - tweezers a must .

Rustoleum can be painted on metal wood or glass fibre. Some plastics MAY need a primer but essentially its about providing a surface that the paint can grip. No prep - no stick.

Wise words Covkid!!! Though I've done a couple of panels in full sun - not recommended but not an absolute disaster Not by choice just the damn clouds disappearing at the wrong time. DO flatten back the base paint in every little orrafice! It does peel if not given a good grip!

I did mine in dark blue 2 years ago and recently decided to go over her again as I had to do a little repair on the tailgate anyway. I was suprised how much the colour had faded, but I have to say a quick once over brought the colour out lovely again, probably better than the first time around. I cannot thank you enough CovKid, as I've probably said before. This thread & the wiki has saved me grands & grands and I often get comments about how great the van looks. And you know what? I love doing it too!

Very rewarding seeing so many doing this now. As you say, touch-up work is a breeze. Not experienced any fading myself in 3 years but that can occur with some colours I guess. That Merc looks the dogs now.
