The two peaks of 28 and 30mpg were both down in the heat, Croatia and Pyrenees respectively. Picos in Oct 2011 I was averaging 24.

Just a comment based on Marks Highs and lows, I have noticed , particularly travelling on the continent that the quality of the diesel differs substantially, in France they sell a super diesel at 7 or 8 cent per litre premium, this does deliver far better mpg. whether the higher cost represents better miles to money spent is debatable. In Ireland some small independent garages sell cheap diesel, but comments i've heard from taxi drivers, couriers etc would indicate that this fuel gives a very poor mpg, compared with full price diesel.

So despite our best efforts to get efficiency from our oil burners, the oil company greedy factor may be the one thing we can't get around, but kudos to all of you who are trying :ok

I finally got round to sorting my very cool running engine out. Fitted the 87*c stat and when I looked at the old one it was the one from my old AAZ (I am using the AAZ belt set up) and I realized I forgot to let Russel know that I had fitted the 80*c stat (for vans with Aircon or something) on the AAZ whn he fitted the TDI. No wonder it ran cool  Anyway I put a thermostatic old cooling sandwich plate on too and it has bumped the temperature up quite a bit and the engine loves it. I use to get a slight juddering in very low revs in third making me change down gear and now all thats gone, thats nice and the engine seems to be a bit more responsive. Might even grab the odd extra MPG too now its not pumping fuel in thats not needed.

Thanks for flagging this up Lloyd :ok

I swapped my stat for a new 87c stat today. Now sits 90-92c. The best bit is the heater now gets hot even when sitting in traffic.

I also noticed the MAF sensor housing has cracked where it goes fits onto the air filter. I filled it with silicon until I buy a new one. Jed, did you fit a genuine or aftermarket MAF? There is a huge difference in price.

if the sensor itself is ok, and its just the housing thats cracked buy a cheap second hand one and swap over the sensor part.
I bought a complete genuine bosch one for around £70 i think? as the one fitted to mine was a cheap copy.
I have a spare MAF to get you out of trouble until you get yourself one, if needed?

Good news on the stat too :ok

Probably an 87c as was in mine but from what I understand is as they get older they open earlier or stay open.

I tried to get a VAG stat but they are £28 with the O ring and can take 10 days to get, if they can still get them. It may be that LLoyd had the last one.

Anyway £3.65 plus vat (trade B) from GSF. I checked it in a saucepan and it started to open at bob on 87c.

Temp needle now sits just above led and maintains temp even when idling.

Mine still runs at 73-78, have got a new stat, but haven't got round to sticking it in. Really stinks of diesel when idling, so could only improve the mpg :ok

I have run another tank of fuel through mine now with the longer gearbox. probably 1/3rd motorway at 75-80mph, 1/3rd city, 1/3rd A roads and it returned 39.3mpg - still mighty impressed.

Should really update my mpg findings. around town, not much has changed. On a long motorway journey i have gained about 2mpg. This is only over about 5 fills, so a better picture will form the longer i keep records. I have also just sent off a set of injectors to have .216 nozzles put in (i wanted to get rid of the cheap nozzles, although they do seem to be ok) They will be properly pop tested and set up on both stages. Apparently this could give me better mpg. The cheaper nozzles will go on the spare engine.
