I think it's also to with having an engine where parts are still readily available, AAZ's are pretty thin on the ground now. Why else would you be circling the corpse of mine?
I don't think you can really argue about idi vs direct injection, direct injection is much better. A 1Z is miles better than a AAZ, it's not just about bhp.
Also to me the m vs E doesn't work, I couldn't fix either at the side of the road. Granted maybe some spanner monkey in Lagos could rebuild a m pump, but surely a E pump still has roughly the same internals? Plus when and if I do breakdown I'm 99% sure it will not be in a 3rd world country, as I've managed not to visit one for the last 38 years
M is good, and do work after a fashion. But E is how they are designed to work
Oh yes, and every time I've broken down in my IDI no f*#*er has been able to fix it at roadside........

I havnt got anything against an AAZ and cant remember ever saying anything bad about one
I was happy with mine and it is just right for a Syncro and what I use it for right up until we did the drive across the Alps from France to Slovenia. Good steady 30mpg, just enough power, basic design etc, and I would have been quite happy for it not to blow up. The reason it did wasnt down to the engine but a series of events that lead to it expiring.
By putting a charge cooler on an AAZ wont make it as powerful as a 1z
The only worry for me with the AAZ was it is to sensitive to heat if you blow a hose or snap a fan belt and dont notice. Its only the head gasket and it can be changed really cheaply if you do the job yourself and although time consuming, it isnt that hard to do.
If you have driven in convoy both on and off road in a convoy of four Syncros in an AAZ with you being the only non TDI the advantages will be obvious. On any trip I have done with Jake in his 1z MTDI he has always got a third more per tank than me in my AAZ, and I got good MPG at 30.

Thats not the point lloydy, the point about "E" anything is that when the electronics go you have to replace it. Now I've never met a spanner monkey in Lagos but Im sure he would have difficulty with electronics.....

its another one of those options where there is no right answer. It comes down to what the individual wants/needs/can afford. A bit like all the other regular topics on here....

From the man who makes a habit of breaking down with depressing regularity

are you realistically ever going to overland your syncro across Africa? Probably not, so do whatever's right for you. As you observed Lloyd, the chances of being fixed at the roadside by the "very nice man" in any vehicle more than 5 years old is virtually nil.
So that rules out any T3, modified or not. You're on your own, so best get to know your vehicle and carry a few strategic spares just in case*
The rule of 6P's always applies: "Proper preparation prevents pi$$ poor performance!"
* There's no point hauling a massive toolkit and tons of spare parts around as 9 times out of 10, the one thing you'll need will be unavailable. Like 4 gallons of coolant for instance...

You can do things with an "E" TDI though that can get you what you want?

i think that this will only apply to forced induction engines for the reasons that andrew noted, well it has in my install. as i had mine on a rolling road to get it jetted correctly, i was pleasantly surprised with the end 114bhp @5680rpm and 144ftlb at 2900rpm, 2bhp up (112bhp quoted and i cant find nor remember the torque figure but it was up slightly).
what ever engine that is fitted will never perform as well as it did in it's donner, the main draw back as far as i can see are the size, weight and the gearing, there is always a compromise when fitting a different engine in to a van,

There's a diesel scooby boxer on eBay now.... That's got to be a bit special hasn't it???? And only £3750! Only the motor though.... Ouch

2bhp extra, handy

Beg to differ a jx intercooled on jaegers site puts out about 95

An AAZ could easily put out 110!

I knew I had done something wrong, thanks for the info. I best put a 1.6jx in my van then with a charge cooler on as it looks to be about 4% more powerful than a 1.9TDI
I would have saved thousands and could have had it all done in a couple of hours.

There's only one way to settle this.............
Seriously though in my opinion, if you have the money, tdi and new ratios is best. If you don't have the money, or don't want to pay out that amount, then a aaz is great.
Petrol wise, subaru for the big spenders, then gti or dj. As we've seen in a recent thread, Volvo is really only viable for a pick up, unless you want to hack away at the back of your van

If Neil gets 114bhp, A stock LR VE mechanical pump on a 1Z gets the same
unless you wernt trying up that hill mate

And you'll get a pump like that just about anywhere
