I am very glad that my dj runs on a carb - this system sounds like a nightmare! (one potential solution....)

Re: "kangarooing" 2.1DJ
PROGRESS!!!!!!!
Fixed my ISCU with a new Power Transistor (there are 2 BD438 Transistors on the board, I had 2 ISCUs which were both knackered, so I took all 4 Transistors off, measured them and put the 2 good ones onto one board, but you can get the bit for about 35p, I just couldn't be bothered to wait for a delivery from RS components!!!)
Idle Stabilisation now works.
Still kangaroo'd like crazy though (remember it has been worse since it was professionally re-timed!) Now I don't like timing by the seat of my pants, but decided to bite the bullet and try retarding it. Marked up the dissy and and retarded it quite a bit. Drove beautifully! I then advanced it by tiny amounts until The driveability became rubbish again, then retarded it a smidge again. It is now about 2mm away from where the garage timed it to, but not sure what that equates to in degrees. Wil get it retimed again and CO etc set on Monday hopefully to see where it is now compared to standard. Will let you know how i get on!

No, no timing gun. Thought i'd leave that bit to the professionals since it'd need the CO set too, maybe have to invest in one, they're not exactly expensive.
There have been a number of dodgy connections in that engine bay too. The loom was pretty butchered.... not sure if it is the original one. Mine is a non-aircon version , but seems to have the wire from the ISCU for the aircon pump that is just tied up by the Coil; maybe they all have that though? Spent a while trying to find something to connect to this "loose wire"!!!!
Suppose it won't do any harm if it is too retarded, just llose a bit of power/efficiency. Better than being too far the other way I think?

Re: "kangarooing" 2.1DJ
Still wasn't driving perfect, but I put it back into the garage today.
Provided them with the specs for the DJ off Brickyard and they've set the timing again and checked the vac advance, set the CO and HC. All is apparently well. Last time they set it all as low as possible so maybe a tad too lean, and when I had retarded it by guesswork I had taken it to 0deg BTDC, so glad I had it checked!
It is still not driving perfectly, but better than it was before I started out and since it has done nearly 1/4 million miles maybe that's as good as it is going to get without refreshing more bits (throttle body wear, checking valve clearances etc once it warms up etc etc)
It is apparently a smidge rich at idle, but leans right off once off idle!
