replacement for Pierburg 2e3?
Ok, so my van went in to the garage as the carburettor auto choke wasn't working ( the little plastic bit) is broken, it attaches to the spring and shaft so the choke flap will close. Also the pull down unit needs replacing and the solenoid also.
Can I find these parts? Nope, tried looking for a refurbished carb to replace mine, still no joy!
The garage has only one and they don't want to sell as they took it off a spare engine, so currently stuck without my van.
What's the best replacement for my carburettor? Checked everywhere and no joy, the only one I can find is the webber from JK and that's nearly £700!
The van has cost a lot since it's been in the garage as the starter motor and flywheel needed replacing as they found lots of metal shavings and also the clutch hadn't been fitted correctly as bolts were either missing or just pushed into the holes, so the friction plate and slave cylinder have both been replaced as well.
Any idea would be great on the carburettor

Don't get a Weber. They're pretty carp.
That part can be 3D printed. There's a member here has the CAD file for it and has been known to print a few. Maybe put a post in the Wanted section?

I think Tobydog can make them. Very helpful guy
I've just seen your other thread. Did you not have any luck?

I'm very grateful to Tobydog for printing the part.
As for the other parts, the garage has cleaned the brass valve and will get the pull down from Heritage.
So at this point, I'm pretty happy as will be getting our daily back pretty soon.
As for a replacement for the Pierburg, the only carburettor I've come across, is the Weber and only if there's no other option due to price and not really fitting in the engine bay without removing some of the insulation.

I got my Weber from euro carb, £500 plus vat, very happy with it.

Re: replacement for Pierburg 2e3?
The Weber does look good, have seen though that part of the soundproofing needs removing to fit?
Re: replacement for Pierburg 2e3?
Had my Weber on for over 10 years, never had an issue with it. Starts 1st time every day.

That's good to know. Did you have to make any alterations to the engine cover so it could fit?
Thinking that if the garage can't fix my choke, then it's the Weber

Re: replacement for Pierburg 2e3?
Had to remove a small amount of insulation directly above the carb. Other than that it was a straight fit.

That's good to know, I was on JK reading the reviews of their Weber and some of the reviews weren't that good, saying you have to make adjustments to parts of the Weber as well as removing all the sound proofing!
Since it's been fitted, have you noticed anything in the performance or fuel efficiency?

Re: replacement for Pierburg 2e3?
I haven't had to touch my carb since I fitted it. I have fitted a catch can though as I didn't want any condensation going into my clean carb. I blanked off the inlet from breather tower as I use my bus every day all year round.
As for fuel economy! couldn't tell you. When it gets low I just put some more fuel in.
Performance wise, it runs very well. I found the second choke came in faster with it being a mechanical choke rather than a vacuum unit.
Just my experience though. Others may have had different results.

From your experience, the Weber sounds like it's worth the money long term, if you use your bus/van every day. At least you know, it's reliable no matter the weather!

Found this on Ebay. A lot cheaper than JK. Not exactly the same carb as mine.
This type was common on a lot of 70's and 80's Ford's. Also used on type 4 air cooled engines. My carb is a 34 DAT WEBER. Getting hard to find now.

Re: replacement for Pierburg 2e3?
The reason I say the Weber is poor (in my opinion) is because I have removed several from customers' vans due to persistent running problems. These were cured by restoring them to the original Pierburg 2e3 setup. I accept that not everyone will have such disappointing experiences with the Weber, but I feel it's important to bring it to the attention of anyone considering the swap.
Sadly, Bromyard VW are no longer able to offer their excellent Pierburg refurb service, but I strongly urge DG people with carb issues to explore alternative ways of getting their Pierburg restored to its original performance.

Re: replacement for Pierburg 2e3?
Thanks for that, it's good to hear both sides of the Weber.
I would rather try to keep the Pierburg as it's original and was fitted at time of "birth".
What with Tonydog's kind assistance with 3D printing of the rare plastic bit and the garage cleaning out the brass valve and then fitting another pull down, I'm hoping she'll keep running for a few more years, before any further work on the carburettor.
I will have to use the Weber if all else fails!
As for Roger at Bromyard VW, he does have a mobile which he amswers, he also sells parts and his advice for fixing the Pierburg.
