Evening all. 1983 2ltr petrol CU engine. When the engine is cold my van won't idle and just suits out. After 5mins of driving or racing it idles perfectly. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Fitted a new idle cut off valve thinking it might be that but no joy.

Re: Cold idle problems.
My first thought is that the fast idle setting is out, or its not latching when you pump the throttle prior to starting. Though with twin carbs they're unlikely to both fail. I assume this is a new problem? Did it gradually develop or happen suddenly?
Might be worth checking that the throttle opens fully with the pedal on the floor, might not be going far enough to set the choke. Try opening throttles fully using the bar between the carbs rather than the foot throttle prior to starting.

Re: Cold idle problems.
Thanks for the reply. Tried opening the throttle using the bar between attendants but it didn't make any difference, still wouldn't idle when started from cold. This is a problem that has gradually got worse over time. Recently had the carbs rebalanced, courageous have anything to do with it?

Re: Cold idle problems.
Can you check that the throttle is held open when the choke is set? Usually you can see that the butterfly stop adjuster screw is not touching the side of the carb body. Sadly I don't have a photo to hand, it would be simpler to show what I mean.
Balancing the carbs is not a simple job of twiddling a screw, but if the process is followed it's not difficult. You say it's a problem that's been getting worse over a period of time, so probably not the cause.
Has the engine been faltering at all during light throttle opening. I'm wondering if maybe the progression mixture screws have moved, mine have in the past. They are small screws hidden in a tube on the lower outside edge of both carbs. I think mine are set to 2 1/4- 2 1/2 turns out from fully in. Don't turn them in tight, just to the contact point or you will damage the needle or seat. Sorry for lack of photos.
Check Sarran's videos on carb setup, you'll see what to look for on his YouTube site.
