Repairing/replacing a faulty choke pull down

Post by whyte87 »

Hi all,

I've had a 83 1.9 petrol T25 for a few years now. First couple of years it ran like a dream. But last 6 months have been extremely frustrating. Very unreliable and 2 cancelled holidays so far this year due to van failure.

Amongst other things we've been told we've a faulty choke pull-down that needs replacing. We're in the process of getting everything fixed but with the choke pull down we've been told these are out of stock, have been for over 12 months, and that the replacement part has likely become obsolete. A google search for the part would suggest this is likely.

So what do i do now? There must be other van owners out there with similar issues? How do i resolve the problem?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Callum

Last year I got mine from Gower and Lee. It was new but one for a Golf, they are the same but have an extra port that can be blanked off. Blank supplied with it.

I have a brand new 2E3 carb top for the Syncro version of the carburettor and it has new genuine Pierburg choke pull down unit on it. I listed it in for sale but no interest thus far....it wouldn't be that difficult to fit this whole unit to a 2wd but you'd have to add the external extra swirl pot/vapour separator 052 127 177 C that has the fuel return on it, or something that would allow flow to carb and return to tank, a bit of fuel pipe plumbing and a bracket would be needed, though I admit I don't know where you'd find the separator, JP did remake them but they don't seem to be readily available at present. Otherwise it's a useful parts donor for refurbishing your existing carb, or if you were good at machining you could probably add the fuel return outlet that is missing on this version

last time they were available made in China through JP group they were £7 - they only make the Golf version but it can be used on ours with a blanking plug on the second port
Jeff at Gower and Lee told me Pierburg sold off all their stock for our carb over 25 years ago, basically at the point VW, said they didn't want any more spares, i.e. 15 years after the end of production and we've been using up all the spares since then. There may be a supplier in Germany who does have stock but they are impossible to deal with, especially post Brexit.

When I needed one before I got one from G&L I was offered a second hand one from a breaker for £150 😲
