a late but very sincere thank you for your help.
it must have been an airlock. i scrupulously followed the instructions found somewhere on the forum, worked like a charm.

back to my engine number, aidan, i can't seem to find any number anywhere around the breather tower (at least without dismantling bits and pieces). i took a picture, wonder if that would help?
