Fuel tank replacement

Post by Mjhayes »

It would seem I have to replace my fuel tank the van is fuel starved and after some inspection it would seem that the pump works fine - but I’m assuming there is so much crap in the bottom of the tank that the fuel pump when drawing fuel is clogging up the outlet and starving the engine of fuel.

So can this be the case and if I’m changing the tank (I won’t be doing myself, but need to source parts) so should I be buying new everything? Senders, pipes etc.

What do we think - or is there something else I can try before replacing the tank??

Thanks

Hi
I came to ask the same question, but saw your post. Did you get sorted?

Here's what I have put together from Brickwerks not sure if I am missing anything.
Fuel Tank - T3 / Late
Fuel Level SenderT3 / '86>
Rubber Pad for Fuel Tank - T3 / 2WD x 4
Fuel Filler Surround - T3
Fuel Filler Rubber Neck - T3 / LT / Genuine VW
Hose Clip - 9mm / W2 / 60-80mm
Metal Ring - T3 / Fuel Filler Neck
Self Tapping Screw - 4.2 x 16 / Philips / Countersunk / Raised Head / BZP

Added:-  Thanks multisi
Breather Grommet - T3 / 2WD / Fuel Tank / Alternative  (genuine not available)
Fuel Tank Filler Grommet - Late (48mm)

I also wanted to ask about recommendations for painting the tank as they only come primered.

Thanks all

You havnt listed any tank rubber seals like the main fuel filler grommet 48mm , the old one could be reused if its still soft, and yes give the tank a good paint and waxoyl as well.

When were the fuel lines last changed?

I think maybe removing the tank is an ideal opportunity to run new lines in?
Generally, adding things to the list of tasks can go on forever - having said that, the rubber can perish quickly.

Fuel lines are always a good shout. I’m good there at the moment. I replace every 2 years at least.

Thanks

Shouldnt need to replace them that often, what type are they, where do you buy them from. there are some bad quality fuel hoses , get the ones from Brickwerks for safety.

I know, but just something I have general done after finding the lines like sieves when I first bought the van. Bit of paranoia 😂. I always get them from Brickwerks, nice and easy replacement. How often would you recommend?
