I re-rollered mine a few wks back. I put the last coat on too late (3pm?) and the evening condensation messed up
The finish on the front. Will sand lightly and do again. I won't paint so late in the day again. Apparently there are more flies / bugs later on so early is better all round I guess

I do mention all this on the DVD. Always best to start early, plus damp isn't good for any paint that is drying.

I just lost track of time and it was beautiful out so I just forgot it was still April and colder / darker earlier! Lesson learnt

You may need to wait a week or two to flat it though. Grand job of the back though. You do gain a confidence with how to use the roller after a while. Trick is not to mess to much - sort the roller marks and move on quickly - best way.

Pick a favourable day to paint and stop before 2pm. It still gives you four hours if you start around 10am.

Hi all

Has anybody got a suggestion to the closest RAL or Pantone to Marsala Red LH3D?

I am redoing the outside of my van so as close as possible - does not have to be exact just the closet possible.

I have narrowed it down to RAL 3011 or RAL 3013

There isn't a close match, even if it appears to be the case. Pantone and RAL are completely different things. If you want Marsala, you'll have to get it mixed unfortunately.

I think I understand what you are saying with reference to Rustoelum paints however there must me a RAL code that is close to Marsala Red (forgetting the Rustoleum part of it).

Depends what you mean by close. I started in the print trade so very familiar with mixing colours. Marsala Red is a mix, so you won't get what I'd call a close match - just a very vague approximation and even then not close.

I should point out that this question has come up a few times. If you really want Marsala Red, get it mixed. If not you'll have to go for a vaguely muddy red colour and be happy. Its as near as you'll get in the standard RAL range which is limited despite the choice.

Better really to pick a colour you love and adjust to it.

My van started life in slate blue but was converted as a new van to a mini-bus by Devon, who painted it a dark maroon. I bought it about 8 years ago and converted it to a basic camper but wasn’t sure what to do about the bodywork. Then I discovered this thread and set about replacing various bits of bodywork (including the windows) ready for a good Rustoleum rollering… The colour was non-standard and a bit dull I thought, so I picked a RAL number that was similar.
Initially I experimented with Purple Red (RAL3004) but I found that too bright so I switched to Wine Red (RAL3005), which is just a touch lighter than the colour Devon had painted it. It’s not Marsala Red but not a million miles away!

I’m quite happy with the results, though it’s still work in progress as always…

Has anyone used any of the Rustoleum silvers? I am doing up a fibreglass boat (Shetland 535) which I also plan to paint with Rustoleum. I’ve chosen Ultramarine Blue for the topsides but want to do the hull silver. I’m aware that Rustoleum is a non-metallic finish so I’m a bit worried it might look more like battleship grey rather than a proper silver.

OR.. has anyone tried mixing Rustoleum with a metallic or pearl pigment powder? These are marketed as if they can be mixed with almost any paint to give it "a metallic sheen". It's tempting to give it a try.

The best RAL colour would probably be 9006, White Aluminium.

Any thoughts?

I've now bought paint. The RAL 9006 White Aluminium, definitely looks silver inthe can and the guy at the paint shop said it is a metallic

The RAL 5200 Ultramarine Blue is a superb colour so the boat should look fantastic when it's done..

Metallics do not work well rollered. This is because they are suspended particles which work better sprayed. Definately DON'T test it on your vehicle - try it on some scrap first. You'll see what I mean.
