Just back from B&Q ,looked through the 4" sponge rollers and none are marked as "high density" so I asked a member of staff as there were several types and they say they don't have high density ones and there were none of the sponge finger applicators either , when I searched online B&Q were also listed as retailers for "Rustoleum" but they had never heard of it !

Gloss rollers! They're white, hard to miss. And when you do find them, you'll see why they're often called 'high density'.

was reading the back of the pack as staff didn't know and ones they had said for "emulsion and water based paint " no mention of gloss paint use and to be honest didn't look any different to the ones in the pound shop , I ordered some of the sponge brushes off ebay as I couldn't find them in any of the shops , I will have look in a larger B&Q tomorrow for those rollers , cheers .

yeah but I would like to get some paint done before the winter , I have started prepping will see how the weather goes hope we get a few warm days in Sept. , I notice we are already getting heavy dew at night and its usually mid morning before it clears , visited a larger B&Q yesterday and managed to pick up the roller refills , had to order the foam brushes online though couldn't find any in local shops , if we do get it warm enough in day I am hoping that it will harden off enough overnight as it cools , will have to make sure I time end of painting carefully though.

Yes I bought one a week ago and been going through it before starting also getting my gear together as said , im just hoping I can at least make a dent in it before bad weather comes .

Skimp on prep and it'll show. Thats the key thing to get right. Paint goes on fast.

Whilst prepping the Hitop I have found an area of repair by a previous owner which has cracking in the surface, is a fine smear of filler good enough or should I use some type of sealant , I have read that "sikaflex" should be used around the Hitop to body joint but I see there are several types of it (by number) is this the best sealant and if so which one to last ?

sikaflex Is good stuff. Or tigerseal or another brand of pu sealant from a motor factors. It depends on what and where you're sealing. Post up a photo of the area...

I'm afraid I don't own a transporter or a VW, I found this forum a while back and was particularly interested after a few pages back saw a Mercedes Vito, I too am a vito owner. I bought it cheap and have bought some rustoleum to clean it up.

I did the prep work and first coat after reading all 180 pages of this thread, and got a lot of bubbles. I left it to see if they would pop and it would flatten out, but it didn't. I have now sanded back and have tried for a second coat. I got lots of bubbles again. I have ordered the DVD. But I am wondering what I am doing wrong in the meantime. I have mixed with approximately 20% white spirit. Everybody claims it to be so easy but I can't seem to get it to work out with out a sea of bubbles, I have tried re-rolling but was trying not to overwork, it just seemed to make it worse.

Could I have the mix wrong? Does it tend to be more bubbly when the mix is too thick or thin?

Any help would be much appreciated!

What grade of wet and dry should I finish with for paint prep before I apply the paint?

I've done 240, 320 and 400 so far.

Neilfenstein, whilst I havent read all 180 pages of the thread, I have read the guide thoroughly, and have a little experience using the rustoleum combicolor paint... My immediate thought is that 20% seems like like a lot of thinning. My second thought is that white spirit isn't ideal - Rustoleum doesn't use the same paint chemistry as conventional gloss paint - it is on a different base (xylene I think). If you are going to thin it as much as 20% you might be better off using the rustoleum thinners, such that the thinner mixes properly with the paint.

Thinner proportion is by no means fixed and personally I use 15%

Much depends on ambient temperature, as has been discussed many times.

The bubbles are due to a brand new roller, full of air. Better to let the roller soak in the paint for quite a while and gently expel any. Thinning ratio has little or no bearing on that.

Couple of painting questions before I apply paint.

- I'm doing my final prep with 400 grade wet and dry. Is that good enough?

- I'm going for a two tone finish, light blue at the bottom and white on top. Does it matter which I do first?
