Having damp matches on a motorcycle camping trip will and has necessitated many methods of making fire. Probably the most successful is removing a spark plug and firing it off over a pool of petrol - not the one in the tank. Even this takes a bit of doing in cold damp weather. In complete contradiction of the "Don't try this at home" advice I do like a bit of experimentation

PS I think it is called Ullage or something has resulted in many serious accidents including the deaths of many campers in Spain when an overfilled gas tanker split when no expansion allowance was made. The keeping it simple stupid process (KISS) is right up my street but it is important to be absolutely sure about the designers intent before you intervene.
