Try using fine grinding paste with an old barrel, if the sealing surface is good enough then don't worry but if the sealing surface is compromised then its scrap.
Hard for me to see if that is into the sealing surface or not?

Interested to know how this drives, ALD has a 5.5 final drive ( DG is normally 4.83) as its a diesel box so that means ( As far as I know) that your revs are much lower for a given speed but I guess you can just use a lower gear. Might be interesting to know how it drives on a motorway, revs always seem far too high but perhps its needed.
