Stroke of luck....

Post by syncropaddy »

Last week I decided I needed a new turbo as part of the massive rebuild and upgrade of the Syncro so I went hunting in the local phone book. Came up with a few names and started ringing around. I first tried the obvious VW places but got the same answer from them all.... 'dropped from the parts list'. So undaunted, I tried the specialist suppliers but started to get the same sort of answers from them all. Be it a KKK or a Garrett the answer was 'they aren't been made any more' or 'we can get in a recon exchange and that'll cost about €500 or so'. So, I kept going and as I was about to make the last call to the last supplier on the list, the phone rang. It was a guy called Tony.
'I have a turbo here that might do your VW' he said.
'Oh' I said.
' yeah, its a new KKK unit, its not on our system and we've had it a while now and its listed in the old catalogues for a VW Transporter Syncro. Is that the same as what your looking for?' he said
'What year?' I managed to say without stuttering......
'85 to 90 and its got a different part number to the one you are looking for but I think it might be very similar' he said
I felt weak but managed to say again without giving the game away ' can I have a look at it and maybe we can do a deal on it'
'yeah sure ' he said
' Ill get down to you before lunchtime on Monday' I said .... 'oh and how much would you be looking for it if I was to take it?'
'THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY EURO' he said ........... 'including the gaskets, nuts and studs ......' he added

Need I tell you the rest?

Its sitting on my kitchen table right now :ok
