16" RHD factory power steering install

Post by jes*b »

I am planning to take the Doka off the road when I can get the Panel Van up and running ( :rofl ). I would like to add a factory power steering set up if at all possible and have had my feelers out for info / parts etc. The 16" panel has factory power steering to compare to. Aidan, as ever, shed some useful light on matters.

We know that the 16" upright bearing housing differs from non ps in the casting but not sure if this is limited to just having two holes drilled for the steering link rather than one. Has anyone modded a non ps upright to go ps with? The 16" uprights are ££ as usual so would not like to make a bad call here. And there maybe half a chance of getting hold of a pair of 16" ps uprights but if it's 'just' a question of drilling a new hole well then that would be a good start.

Also I have a RHD rack but not sure this will be straight forward as the Syncro may have a slightly modified rack ( internal?) and again do we know what the differences are. Are there any further differences for 16" ( did any of the very few RHD 16" ever come with ps if the rack was that 'special')

I have asked about anyone converting to 16" factory ps over on IG16 but as I can only post in English , understandably I've not has a response as yet.

In the meantime I await news of an alternative ps route from our R&D dept.

Can't help with your PS questions, but this doka, is it the one that was for sale at Vanfest about 5 years back?
Converted to RHD, not registered, needed alot of rear panel work? Or is it another one, just being nosey. :D

Jes, I have a thread (dormant) about PAS vs. manual steering conversion, measurements of rack strokes etc and included some syncro discussion:

https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=98188" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have yet to measure and compare the effective steering arm lengths (I have a pair of late PAS uprights) but since it's all based on 2wd kit it's not definitive. 16" are a bit of a grey area, apparently the racks had a different part number.

Uprights aren't just drilled of course, they need to have a taper hole put in to a controlled depth...

Have been speaking with a couple of guys over on IG16 about this now and both have given same advice - that the 2WD PAS rack can be used without issue on a Syncro . I have asked about any know differences but none known as yet. Anyone tried this that could feedback ?
