LED (DOT approved) Headlights

Bueno Estente,

I have seen such as 7 inch LED headlights LAMP fit Land Rover Defender VW T25 T3 Vanagon sealed beam | eBay UK on Fleabay and wondered if my fellow Vanagonisti have fitted such Headlights to their trusty Brick.

I am currently using LED Bulbs in the stock H4 Headlights but proper LED Headlights are tempting me. Ideally DOT approved ones.

Any advise or ideas much appreciated.

Hi Rick,

Did you get any further with your headlight question?

I'm thinking of changing to LED if I can, I have the same questions as you so just wondering if you have any answers.

Pretty sure that you cannot run LED lights legally on a UK vehicle if it did not leave the factory with them.

I've even been told by 2 mechanics that if I installed LED bulbs on my T3, they would fail it on an MOT.

I ran my previous daily with LED side lights (they were a nightmare to change), but I never felt the need to run LED's on my van. The originals work just fine and access isn't an issue.

The relevant bit of the MOT Manual is section 4.1.4., which states in regard to replacing the whole headlight unit with an LED one:
If a complete headlamp unit has been replaced with a unit that was manufactured with HID or LED light sources, it must not be failed for ‘Light source and lamp not compatible’ but it must meet all other requirements detailed in section 4 of this manual specific to the type fitted at the time of test.
The same section also states that replacing the bulb in a halogen headlight unit with an LED bulb would be a fail.

Dont put LEDs into standard headlights they were not designed for them. Also installing LEDs on our vans will be considered a modification. So best inform your insurance company.

I fitted these. E marked and legal.

LED "bulbs" rarely work with original light fittings because the light source is ofter wrongly poitioned for the reflector geometry and fresnel lens.

I have the Osram H4 night breakers and the relay setup. Its all anyone needs.

I have Nightbreakers fitted too.
Bear in mind if fitting LED lights, the legal bit...

According to the DVSA MOT Inspection Manual, headlamp washing and levelling systems are only a legal requirement if the LED headlamp (or high‑intensity discharge lamp) has a luminous intensity exceeding 2,000 lumens Matters of Testing.
  • If the lamp’s output is 2,000 lumens or less, it is treated as an ordinary lamp and washers are not mandatory.
  • If the output is above 2,000 lumens, washers (and levelling systems) must be fitted.

I'm going on the idea that 1. Anything is better than the old candles and 2. these are sold for Land Rovers and other classics which never had headlamp washers anyway.
Won't need an MOT next year either ;)
FWIW I have Nightbreakers fitted to the Sprinter and they are still feeble compared to everything else on the road. Wish it had the HID option (and it does have lamp washers fitted)

Been running a set of these for about 8 years, Only once has a tester even mentioned it in passing. But as said above, If you replace the whole unit it shouldn't be a problem as that unit is designed to work correctly, IIRC all I had to do was drill and tap some holes in the LED heat sink to fit them to the adjuster ring on my T3.

I accompanied mine with a matching set of 4 spotlights, All have the outer ring sidelight bit so I get 6 circles, And my sidelights are nearly as good as the old dipped headlights :)

There are no conflicting views, You can replace the whole headlight with an LED one but you cant just put LED bulbs in the original headlight.

If you are worried about insurance just contact them and ask.

....on vehicles REGISTERED pre April '86.

Up to 01st April 86 you can use a full led headlamp, after than you can't.

As I understand it.

I read the above that a complete replacement headlamp unit HID or LED, is not a fail.

The inference being that because the light source focal point has been changed (optimised for filament, LED etc possibly being different), it can adversely affect the light pattern.

A complete teated luminaire optimised for the LED light source will carry an E mark and be legal.
