Thin blue wire

Post by dogbreath100 »

Hi , the thin blue wire coming from the alternator has broken on the connector block maybe a foot or so from the alternator. . I cut the block off and just joined the wire together and now the battery light
is permanently on . I cannot find the connection block . Anyone any ideas.
thanks

Thanks for that . I took the alternator to the local auto electrician and he said it’s not charging .
What are the chances of the blue wire broken and the alternator not charging at the same time .
Will let you know the final outcome . Thanks again

How long have you owned the van?
If it’s a recent purchase is it possible the wire was just to conceal the faulty alternator?

The thin blue is the exciter wire. Grounds the dash light through D+ on the alternator.
If it is broken then the alternator will not charge and the charging light will be off all the time

Measure voltage at the D+ pin on the alternator with ignition on. It should be near battery voltage.

Thanks for the replies ,
I have the van 17 or 18 years now and it’s  fairly reliable .
€20 for the auto electrician and it’s back up running perfect . Thanks again
