Fitted extra large LT 4x4 syncro style mirrors today

Post by Cruz »

Finally got around to fitting the new LT mirrors I got from VW.

I sourced the correct T3 lower mount brackets new from classic parts via Brickwerks (251-857-541) so I never modified the LT lower brackets or drilled a new hole in the door. Some others have.

First of all the mirrors I have are heated (I'm going to wire them in later)

You can see there is a nice slot between the lower mount holes for the wire to feed into

Image

I drilled a 6mm hole in the lower mount gasket for the wire to go through

Image

The top mount on LT arms doesn't quite line up with the angled part of the cab door but the arms are fairly flexible and it can be enticed to fit. Rather than line this bracket up when screwing it in, which can strip the screw hole, I bolted the mirror to the door using the lower mount and marked the hole positions of the top mount on the door.

I then removed the top mount from the arm (watch you don't lose the little spacer bushes) and using the top marked hole position as a guide I re-positioned the top bracket to sit flush to the angled part of the cab door, re-marked the holes, drilled and fitted the top mount

Image

I then refitted the mirror arm to the top bracket. You can see that it does not sit straight

Image

This is not a problem because you can pull the arm straight as you fit the two screws in the bottom bracket.
Here’s a comparison between the standard mirrors and the LT ones

Image

And here’s the job done

Looking good, always wanted a set for mine but I'm too grippy to pay the cost of them. Maybe one day that elusive bargin will come my way.

Noticed your window rubbers could do with a clean don't you think?

 :ok

Who ever notices the rubbers?...................ooooops

Gaz they only cost me about £115 BRAND NEW. They are about 30% bigger than the syncro mirrors

Thanks for the photos! Look great!

Question though. When you drilled the holes for the top mounts, how are the bolts secured? Are they like self tappers, or did you need to insert a kind f thread into the holes?

I just used self tappers as per original VW fitment (oval hd. csk. self-tapp. screw B5,5X16)

Instead I used Countersunk No10 x 3/4" security tappers (4.8mm x 19mm metric) as No12 screws were hard to find in a size shorter than 1 inch

Bottom ones are M6 x 20mm security countersunk machine screws

E D I T: Just noticed that VW fit the top bracket with rivets too

I really want to do this but I don't care about the heated mirrors - do you know if you can get the non-heated ones cheap as well? thanks

No. Non-heated are obsolete.

You don't need to wire them up

It's all academic now anyway as I noticed last night that the upper passenger side bracket 251-857-539A is now obsolete. So there is no way of making the available drivers side mirror into a passenger version unless you can find a 2nd hand bracket.

I posted this on the yard so I amy as well put it here too

There MAY be a few of the following heated LT mirror arms available from VW on back order via your local commercial dealer. That means you may get one or they will go obsolete a few days after you order them. But worth trying

The only thing different from one side to the other is the top bracket. However the left hand top bracket to convert the arms so they fit on the other side has just gone obsolete I'm afraid.

291-857-514B RIGHT SIDE Heated 4x4 LT mirror and arm (shown below and on the green van above) - £40+vat VW
291-857-513B LEFT SIDE OBSOLETE - classic parts price 150 euros
These mirrors swivel through 360 degrees

Image

Just the mirrors like in the image above
291-857-547 Big Ear Heated Mirror - VW

Fixings to fit it
600-957-533 Clamping plate - VW Classic - 8.65 euros
N044782 M5x50 Allen Head Bolt x2 - VW

281-857-514D RIGHT SIDE Heated 'Syncro Style' mirror and arm - £35 + vat VW (non heated version shown on white LT below - Orange van is a T3 arm with a heated LT mirror on it)
281-857-513D LEFT SIDE OBSOLETE - Classic parts price 150euros
These mirrors are fixed to the arm in the vertical plane and can only be adjusted from side to side

Image

Just the mirrors like in the image above
281-857-547C Heated Mirror - VW

The fixings for the mirror
281-857-532A Bush - VW
281-857-533A Clamp - VW
281-857-538 Cap - VW
N0103664 - Bolt M6x52 - VW

As for the rubber gaskets the top ones are obsolete but the bottom ones can be bought from classic 281857543D 2.32 eurios

I hear brickwerks have had a bit of a run on classic orders for the bottom T3 mount bracket

Now that the left side upper bracket 281-857-539A is obsolete (its the same bracket for T3's and LT's) maybe pestering classic parts will get them remade

Pester them here :D

I read all through this, and especially the last but one posting, in the hope that it would tell me that I could get the top mount gaskets somewhere. But then Cruz finishes by saying they are obsolete.

I have just 'pestered' classic parts about them, but does anyone have a pair available, please?

thanks

They are obsolete from everywhere. Classic did list one side but when I ordered them they then said they could not fulfil the order

Someone is selling home-made rubber neoprene reproductions on ebay

Bit pricey, but beggars can't be choosers I suppose. Unless you make your own

If you want to be a bit more specific when pestering classic here's the numbers

281 857 545 A - Listed as LT but the upper brackets on the more up to date arms are the same on an LT and T25

251 857 545 & 546 - Listed as for a T25 but the brackets on ETOS are the same as on an LT so I've no idea what the difference is to the other part number - Classic listed 546 as available but could not supply me with them
