Mechanical knocking noise

Post by the White Nomad »

Ive got a mechanical knocking noise which increases with the engine speed . It sounds to be coming from between the water pump and cylinder head and the noise increases as you rev the engine.
Could it be from the water pump or something more serious like the big end bearings. The van drives fine as its just back from a 1500mile trip around Scotland.
Any ideas? cheers.

Even though you just done a 1500 mile trip, has it been stood for abit? Could well just be the tappets drained down, oil level ok?...Run it till it gets warm, it may just stop rattling
Mmm what's that strange smell from my exhaust...

What engine is it ?

On our DJ there was a rumbling noise that had me worried ... that was the water pump bearings (not leaking though) if you carefully hold a screwdriver to the pump housing while the engine's running you may feel it.

knock , clank clank or tac tac..

Hydraulic tappets make a dreadful din when they leak down.. mine do it after a long trip followed by a weeks lay up

Its a clank clank which increase in repitition with the revs, its not the tappets as i know that sound and its constant with the engine running for 10 mins and more warmed up and doesnt go away.
Sounds to come from where the crank and water pump meet.
Just noticed it as i was changing a ht lead which was playing up whilst on tour. But the engine runs fine its a 1.9 60 hp job.
Dont mind if the water pump on its way out but hopefully no major bearing.
Would the engine run normal with problems with the big end?

What year is the van ? The later DG 1915 has a buzzer of doom which would very likely be on before you could hear crank knocking.

Take the fan belt off and start it, don't run it for long but if the noise is still there its the engine or if it has disappeared then its the water pump, front pully or alternator.
