New gearbox 1990 t25 5 speed manual

Hey guys Im a newbie vw owner and 6 months into having my van I've had issues with the 2nd gear slipping out. And then crunching to go back in. Also the reverse didn't want to go in gear a few times until I got under the van and wiggled the linkage around.

I've taken him to a mechanic and he's told me it definitely needs a full rebuild. I'm just wondering what sort of costs I'm looking at for a job like that? Am I better off buying a reconditioned one myself and fitting it?

Any advise?

Get a second option ! 
unless this man knows these vans, he maybe leading up a expensive path , that may only be worn, or badly adjusted linkages ......

I rebuild these boxes, it could be a linkage issue, but it could be it's very worn and that your mechanic is right, if he's dropped the oil and seen the drainplug magnet or found it has been changed just before van was sold to you so the magnet appears clean; full rebuild for 5 speed from £950
if passing Llanfyllin Station Works garage could check out the linkage knowing what they are looking at and test drive for diagnsis, 01691649649 and I am 200 yards away.

Sound advice from where I stand. Yonks ago before I knew of Aidan, I had my five speed rebuilt for £750 - lot of dosh at the time and it went boobies up in France three months later under warranty. The french garage wanted 2K7E to fix it while the recovery firm (read the small print) wanted to scrap it - the whole van I mean  - the warranty not covering the cost of recovery to the UK. 
When I finally got it back to the UK the casing was found to be damaged where the linear bearings for the selector gismo  sits so after three months waiting for the hapless repairer to find another casing I got it back to my workshop where I machined the affected area and made an interface bushing. I also had to virtually project manage the job and source some tricky ball cages etc from a firm in the midlands. 
If it goes wrong for a second time I know who will be my first port of call.

Thanks for the info guys, seems my usual guy isn't too keen on taking this job on... Does anyone have any trusted vw contacts it the midlands that could help? I'd rather have this done right because I'm driving to the Netherlands in it

Put it on a pallet and send it to aidan , at least you know it’s going to someone who actually knows the ins and outs of it , talk to him, he knows what courier to use ....
