DF or DG? Engine Code location?

Post by irishkeet »

Hello

Im popping up an engine to sell for parts, images below...I though it was a DG but with the single choke Solex Im now told it may be a DF engine.

Can anyone help me with locating the engine code. I did a search of the forum & the block but Im no wiser as yet

looks pretty corroded to me, twin vac df dizzy and early case says df to me

cast in engine head code tells you if it's DF or DG to be sure

No, DF was a low power version ( and not very desireable) different heads, and cam, maybe pistions different not sure but it was most common early on in the early case.
DG was made early and late also.

the cast in head code is the real giveaway, also you can see the inlet posts where manufold fits are smaller on df to dg get a pic up of them with bits of rag removed for clarity and It will be clear, pic shows df gasket by dg head

everything else just bolts on so people could havd fitted a dg into a van that was origionally a df, heads could have been swapped too but lets assume not.

Hi itchyfeet

I had another look this morning, the case is an early one as per the photo below

Here is a photo of the head

So this all leads to thinking its a DF but I also found the code, here is a photo
Image

.....so it must be a DG but could it be as you said "everything else just bolts on so people could havd fitted a dg into a van that was originally a df, heads could have been swapped too but lets assume not." The seller told me the engine was a recon before the fire

they are dg heads so it's a dg that was fitted into a df van
common because there were much less df's around

looks like it's been sitting a while

Many thanks for your help with this :ok
The van was last run in December 2014, I bought the van in March this year and only took the engine out y'day, reason it looks this way is because of the top-end fire and the powder used to put the fire out

It's a VW rebuild DG ... or at least the case at one time may have been :ok

You can actually fit a 2.1 DJ into a DF van ... so long as you either swap it to early cooling system or re-engineer your way early > late :ok

I think this is similar to what my van is like, IrishKeet...
Solex carb, DF distributor, DF Inlet manifold, but DG engine case etc.

I have sourced the bits to swap out carb - already changed the distributor a couple of weeks ago - and should do the rest sometime in the new year.
Straight after I sort out my 5sp gearing..!!

If you go to sell the engine, and the buyer needs some of the extras ( carb, Distributor, Inlet manifold ) then ask them to place a wanted add.
If they drop me a PM too I will respond.

if it's a DG engine the buyer probably won't want DF dizzy and carb, a few on here with DFs but most have upgraded to DG for the extra power, in fact many DGs have been swapped with DJs
