Blocked choke hose..

Post by StuM »

Hi All,

Can anyone help me identify the reason for the block in the end of the hose going to 'B' on the choke pull down unit?

Thanks,

Secretly hoping that 'Mr Carb' would be the one to see it - thanks Kev. :ok

Does that mean that this pull down has one more connection, thus it is superfluous and capped off?

Question is.. shall I source the correct pull down, and is it a straightforward job to replace - or will carb need to be set up?

Thanks again.

if it works then leave it, i'd agree that's capped off as it's a twin pipe version

yes relatively easy to replace by driving out the pin, but also need to remove the screw from the rear which catches many people out, that screw is the adjustment.

can't help noticing what looks like a cheap and nasty pipe clip on your fuel inlet :o

Thanks. I have hot running issues so will check the choke operation to rule that out first.

Yes - old photo. In the middle of replacing all the fuel line with proper clips and new hose:

Carb outlet was the first to be done.

I agree with Mr feet.
The pull down is there for the first 5 mins of engine warm up.
If it opens the choke flap when the acc. is depressed then leave it..
My only issue is the pull down restrictor that would have been inside the vacuum pipe to the unit. Hopefully it's still there.
If this is missing then hesitation and possible stall results during snap acceleration during warm up.

What's the hot running problem?

Thanks Kev.

Hot running documented here:

https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=118195

Basically, when it get's stuck in traffic for a decent length of time, it starts running badly - cuts out under acceleration and refuses to start until cooled down. As per advice on that thread I'm sorting the fuel pipes and re-routing to ensure it's not fuel getting vaporised pre-carb. Also wondering if the split hose that was pissing fuel out would impact (although as it is post carb, not sure how it would). Safety risk aside!

Worth checking the manufold heater switches off

If it was overfueling I think you would smell it so probably ignition or fuel starvation

You could try replicating the fault by giving it a good run then stop at home and let it heat up until it cuts out
Then whip the air inlet trunking off and chuck a bit of fuel in say half an egg cup full

If it fires its fuel starvation

If not whip a plug out lay it on the block disconnect king lead and get a helper to crank while you look for sparks

Could be a broken wire they can break so that they conduct some of the time but go high resistace when hot so check the voltage on the coil and bypass cut off valve also when in the hot won't start state

Thanks for the pointers.

It's only done it a couple of times and both times only after sitting in crawling traffic for an hour. First time it didn't stall, but felt like a huge power loss and hesitant. To me it has felt like running rich rather than lean - like old manual choke cars before nudging the choke in.

Second time, when it stalled, it was under load pulling out at a roundabout. It has never failed to idle.

I'll have a play once I have sorted the fuel lines and report back.

Cheers
