rusty stud holding waterpump
Hello, hope someone can advise me on the best action to take to release my water pump. The three nuts that hold it on came of easily compared to the thermo housing etc but the stud to the right as you look at it is stuck in the pump housing. The other two are free and i can jiggle it about a bit. I have given it plenty of lubrication and tapped around the stud, going to leave it to soak again tonight and start again tomorrow. Has anyone else had this problem and how did they resolve it ?

Just spent another couple of hours jiggling, lubricating and heating around this bloody stud, still no joy. Anyone help before i phone for it to be towed away. going to walk away for a bit before i lose the plot.

If you have a welder to hand stick the MIG onto it to get some heat through the stud itself ... then it'll possibly wind out *

Right, i may be able to get hold of one next week, in the meantime i'll carry on heating, lubricating and jiggling. I thought about trying to remove the other two studs [easier access] and then i could work the pump back and forth maybe. Daft thing is these nuts came off the easiest [nice and clean]unlike the ones in the thermo housing. Van passes mot, best weather for ages and the vans off the bloody road!

My normal approach to this kind of problem would be to glue a nut on the stud with Loctite Permanent Retainer, then cut the nut off the stud after I'd got it out. But I have used araldite rapid too. Cut the nut off by hacksawing and splitting or use a nut splitter. If there's enough length of thread available you might be able to do it by locking two nuts together.

Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated. Going to give it more heat and then try and extract the stud, i had thought about locking two nuts together but i may have to cut a normal nut in two or use some thinner ones,it's sods law that it would be the most difficult stud to be stuck with the worst access.

Anyone out there drilled or chisled through the water pump[stud area] to remove it ? Had a helicoil expert round today[he's used by all the local garages] to remove the stud but he cant get any of his drills close to it because the chuck gets in the way and he cant use a longer bit. The thermo housing is all good now, snapped bolts drilled out and tidied up. Seriously pi**ed off.

What a nightmare!
What stud is it holding on, is it the one behind the pulley? Has it come away enough to get a large hacksaw blade between the pump and the block and cut through the stud.
Could then try to get the old stud out or put a smaller one through the middle of it maybe?

My van is 1983, yes it's the stud behind the pulley, the other two are totally free in the pump housing. Got my dad on the case with me, he may be 80 but is pretty good with a drill! Drilled around the stud tonight and going to enlarge the holes tomorrow and maybe have a little chisel. If you see 3 Camperjam tickets from me in the for sale section you'll know its gone pear shaped!

Finally got the pump off!!
Used a small drill bit on the dremel to put a series of holes around the stud, gave them a tap with a chisel in between, spray of plusgas, bit more tapping, bit of heat, a bit more tapping a good shake and then it came off. Stud looks ok too i'll give it a clean tomorrow night. To say i'm relieved is an understatement.

No can't say i'd want to go through that again, although i was pretty pleased when it came off especially after 3 garages had said they didn't want to know. I only had a go because it was a 3 spanner job in the Haynes manual, but that doesn't take into account rusty and siezed nuts/bolts and studs! Put all the tin covering the exhaust manifold and the water tanks back on tonight [had to remove to get clear access to the stud]and also threaded a nut onto the stubborn stud to see if it was ok. Refit the pump/thermo and bleed the system tomorrow morning.
