Decided enough is enough and take the tough love approach.
Pulled out the recip saw, fitted a fine metal blade, inverted the engine so cutting bits don't fall towards the crank and got to work.
Ten minutes later and stuck head is now sitting on my bench.
Now a crash course on stud extraction.

Will use a drift to push out cut studs. They are still immovable by hand.

Despite plenty of heat, even the pins were a pain to pull out.

Even with a VAG-alike expanding mandrel slide hammer the pins can be a waking nightmare, its usually down to a tiny burr on the circlip groove and the drag from carbonised oil deposits on the exposed parts of the pins.

VW actually had a specific reamer tool to deburr the piston after removing the clip and before attempting to pull the pin, so they knew there was an issue there.
