I have lovely original Doka I picked up last year with 114,000 kms on the clock original engine etc etc, anyway Im finally getting around to the cooling system and I was looking for some advice please...
I have a small leak on the right hand cylinder head coolant flange and ordered the stainless replacement from Bricky
Ill be replacing the original front to back pipes with stainless and Ill see what the rad is like when I flush it and this got me to considering replacing all the pipes with the stainless equivalents.....
also replacing the original Water Pump which has a tiny but of calcification around the bottom.
I was just wondering what others think, some of the pipes look a but crusty, the truck is a keeper and the engine will be staying original to the vehicle.
Is there anything else to consider replacing when overhauling the cooling system? cheers
If she’s a keeper Keith and if funds permit l, I’d deffo look at changing all pipes to stainless and getting the slightly larger radiator from Brickwerks.
I’ve changed all mine along with most of the rubber hoses as well (original vw if you can get them) as I know for peace of mind I won’t need to touch them again.
If you can get an original NOS water pump that would be a good move as well as the tolerances with aftermarket parts have been measured by Marco Mansi and the original pump goes above and beyond anything non VW.
So a DG 1.9 with an oil cooler/warmer between engine block and oil filter?
From viewing on my small android phone the leak looks like just a gasket issue?
Check out the coolant hose 025121058C on left cylinder head to coolant ring around engine bay. They corrode under the spring clip. A cheap and very inferior replacement hose gave me plenty of grief. So only replace with a quality OEM part costing about 30 quid. Brickwerks said they will stocking the superior alternative shortly. Or vwheritage claim to have exact replicas.

In hindsight and after pulling my hair out a bit I dont seem to have these coolant pipes...
The metal pipe that runs between the Oil Cooler and Thermostat housing
The metal pipe that runs between the Water Pump and Oil Cooler
My van was manufactured in September 1985, am I correct in thinking both these pipes are for a later DG or a 2.1 WBX?
If you don't have the oil cooler sandwich inbetween your oil filter and engine block then you wont need those pipes as they are for the oil cooler return and feed from the thermostat housing and water pump.
I think only the 2.1's had the oil cooler setup unless retrofitted onto a 1.9 but I could be wrong

Just adding all the stainless pipe prices together hurts, as much as I'd like to do that one day.
I know, I shall inspect and re-use whatever pipes etc are in good nick when I strip the cooling system, in the meantime the first box of goodies has arrived
Not sure you’d be able to do it in Silicone Keith as you have to feed it through and go upwards with it & it’d be difficult with a solid piece - would be great if it you could do it though.

good point the silicone will be less flexible I guess
