clean all conections, battery terminals, check that the battery is fully charged and connections at the starter motor, check and clean all earths, can you hear a ticking when it wont start, that will be poor connection or a tired/flat battery

Unfortunately the NEW battery, with a bit more umph, may just conseal the fact that the fault remains.
Much of the issue lies in the fact you are dealing with a near 30 year old van....corrosion, wear etc.
Common reasons for this symptom are as follows...I've put them in order of likelyhood.

The solenoid swich wire (standard spade connection) and wiring imediately to that terminal have corroded, become loose.
Earth connection on the tail of the gearbox (braided cable) and it connection to the box have badly corroded.
Starter motor fault (usually with the braided wire between solenoid and the starter body, brushes or switch contact in the solenoid)
Ignition switch fault (about a tenner and very common)
Small supporting oilite bush has worn oval (in the bell housing)
Battery positive and negative connections poor.
Yes...the battery but thats been changed now.
Any of the heavy cables and their connections to the starter and chassis.

Tackle from the top down and you should cure this issue.

That would be where you put the ignition key.
Where abouts are you? Maybe a local member could come and have a look for you?

The switch is the other side of the barrel......to change the switch it does require a certain amount of disassembly.

Normally if it is a switch fault a certain amount of key jiggling will tell you if this is the culprit.

Hey Nicko Could be the relay my recond bosch starter has never been great, every bolt has fallen out and have caused their fair share
of problems, took the starter out and checked by auto elec, reinstalled checked all connections, still no joy.

I'm getting their with my fix, I have a WC 1990 and mine has a relay you can see from underneath, mine was a '53'
a normally open 40a 12v 4 pin with resistor , get another of these as it may be the problem, you may have one in the fuse box
but unlikely cause my 'spare' is for the radiator fan, they are $10 from auto store

Cheers Holger

Errr, isn't the solenoid used as a relay/switch? :pimp

Here's a pic of the relay that helps deliver 40A to the starter solenoid , the relay in some funny round about way must be activated by turning the ignition key, can't have that 40A going thru the switch by the wheel. The solenoid throws out the starter to engage with the flywheel, but I'm sure you know that one, all I'm saying is no relay no start

When you say "doesn't start", do you mean;

1. You turn the key on and the dash is blank, no lights nothing.
2. You turn the key on and the dash comes up, but when you turn the key to 'start' nothing happens the engine doesn't turn over.
3. You turn the key to start and the engine turns over but doesn't fire at all - no pops, farts or any noise that might suggest combustion is taking place, (even badly).
4. You turn the key to 'start' and the engine turns over and makes burbley noises like it wants go but just doesn't quite get there.

I think we should be told :D
