Trouble with my pipes......

Hi all

Trying to remove the bolts that are holding the tailpipe (what is left of it) on

Already used WD40 and nothing budging.

If worse comes to the worse, would it be ok to cut the bolts off?



Strange place where the tailpipe sheared off, but I must admit there is a noticeable shake in the back of the van when stationary, which seems to have shaken the weak part of the tailpipe loose. I found it basically hanging by a thin bit of metal so I helped it off!

Any ideas why the van shakes like this - is due to the exhaust itself?

It's all perfectly normal, we've all had the same thing happen ... Billy Pi$$ Pants' tailpipe fell off exactly the same and just missed us

Best thing to do is to cut the bolts down the middle and drill out the treaded part on the silencer flange, fastening the new tailpipe on with 3 new nuts and bolts.

BTW WD40 isn't a penetrating oil ... Water Dispersant40 In future try Plus Gas or a graphite-based penetrant. You'd still not get them undone though

Thought I would let others see what I did as may be useful. Thanks to Ian for the advice

I am sure most of you know what is involved, but I have not done this before and if this is quite a common problem then the pictures may help!

Tailpipe sheared off



Bolt heads cut off with grinder (my new toy!)



What was left of the tailpipe prised off from silencer flange:



The bolts that were left in situ were grinded down flat:





Pilot holes drilled into threaded part of silencer flange through the bits left from the bolts:



I then used a bigger bit to open up the holes!

Now I wait for the new tailpipe and gasket to be delivered!!

It would have been easier to do this with the silencer section removed from the van, but like the rest of the exhaust system this was not budging.

Probably a better way to do this, but it is how I got it done!

Nope, thats about the only way to do it unless box is near end of its life in which case just weld the new pipe on.

1/ engine mounts need to be replaced
2/ Tickover speed to low
3/ missfire at tickover

Glad I've found this thread (and others). I now don't feel quite so bad about the time I have wasted today trying to replace my tailpipe

I'm at the heads ground off studs won't budge stage and I'd just been thinking about cutting my losses and welding the new tailpipe on as the rest of the exhaust probably won't outlive it.

I was thinking that I would just clamp the new tailpipe to the silencer flange, weld a few spots round the edge then smear a load of exhaust sealant round the gap. do you reckon that would be sufficient?
