2ltr Engine Differences

Post by Dubstar »

Does anyone know the difference, if any, between a 2ltr CU engine out of a T3 and a 2ltr bay engine?

Mmm..
IIRC only the very last year of bay window engines (79) were CU and had the same square exhaust port design heads.. I dont know if the base engine is the same, tinware will NOT be... Without putting them side by side and checking all engine mounts bolt holes etc are the same I cant say.. maybe someone else knows..

there some minor differences
the bay cj has a removable oil breather, the heads are different on a cj but i cant remeber which one is which, one has lower exhaust ports think it the t25 cu

i have put a t25 two litre in a bay but never the other way i'm sure it is possible but i think the bay engine is less bhp.

Earlier 2l "CJ" IS different..
but the very last year of Bay production had CU 2l fitted.. that a 1 year only version..

As I said..
Exhaust ports are "SQUARE" not "oval" (as all prev 1.7/1.8/2L type 4 engines) the T25 CU has square exhaust ports too but heat exchangers are longer than the last year bay window ones IIRC

CJ is different.. what I meant was the earlier 2l fitted to bays was a CJ..... if the cases are the same (poss, but need to check bolt holes for mounts and tinware etc...) then should be able to fit the CU heads to it..

Cheers guys. It could be that I'm offered a bay 2ltr, hence the question. Looking at the pics the oil filler needs to point the other way and the heat exchanger outlets look to need changing too.

You cannot use the bay window ancillaries/tinware and most likely the heat exchangers on a T25.. they are model specific.. so forget about them, the base engine (under the tinware etc) IF a "CU" could well be identical..

If you want it "easy" then search out a complete CU from a T25..... (there is one advertised on classifieds)...

Cheers guys. It's not so much searching another engine out, it's just when you are offered one, if you know where I'm coming from. If it's just a case of swapping the tinware, then no probs; however if the manifolds and ports etc are all different, then yes, I might as well get a recon or good secondhand.

They do match up in terms of bolting to gearbox but you may need to cobble together an engine carrier. I mention this because I succesfully fitted a super-bore beetle engine in a crewcab and that really flew, but I had to make up custom tinware to match the different engine bay and use an engine carrier from a different model. A crewcab has the necessary height to take a type1 fan housing ofcourse. Standard T25s would need a custom engine lid unfortunately (tadge over the top in my view). Otherwise the bellhousing on the earlier T25 is the same as a type 2 which is handy and may answer your question. Don't see why it wouldn't fit but expect to mess around a little to seal everything properly. Sheet ally is good for a job like that.

Incidentally, it worked out cheaper (in the end) in building and fitting a type1 in the crew than getting new heat exchanges plus ease and cheapness of spares. Oh, and there was BAGS of room around the engine which made it SO easy to work on.
