Hi - apologies I'm on a roll with questions
the water pump v belt slips and squeals on start up. I have tried to adjust it be removing the shims but the belt is still too slack. I have replaced the belt but this doesn't work either. There is no apparent signs of wear on the pulley halves - Any advice?
Just kampers appear to sell the pulley halves for the petrol engine but its not identified for the diesel - are these interchangeable?
Mine is the 2 belt version - one for the waterpump and one from the water pump to the generator.

Simplest solution to this problem is to find out what the correct size/length of V belt you should use (600mm), then go to your local motor factor and buy one 5mm shorter which will mean you should never run out of adjustment and your squeeling belt will be no more.

Thanks for that idea
a lesson in the bl***ing obvious really. I had obviously got hooked up on the idea that there was only one right belt - not very lateral

before you do that make sure though that the water pump still turns freely and isn't about to seize, this also could be the reason for your squealing belt
(having said that, I have no experience if it is possible to test that by hand or how loose or tight it should be)

Thanks for the suggestion
I have found this source pof belts of different sizes - not much luck with local motor spares or halfords

I'm going to try it out tomorrow and I 'll post the result - fingers crossed.

Re: 1987 1.6 td water pump pulley
worked a treat - all squeals gone, reasonable tension on the belt and a free running pump (thanks peasant for the warning but seems OK) it spins relatively easy by hand no real resistance
thanks for the help
