Thanks kevtherev, Before I saw your reply I changed the timing from the 4degrees I had, which when I checked was more like 3, to 5 degrees, and it ran much better. 50mph and pulling up the same hill I am usually down to 40. Not dislodged the dizzy cap, or cracked it. It is possibly the weakest thing in the area when wielding spanners around the pulley.

Yes it is a Bosch alternator, and that is physically the right regulator. I'll do that as well. Thank you.

Thanks Ian, Thats a great help.
I'll swap the filter anyway, its been there years, and I'll check the carb filter, I guess the bush in the bell housing can be accessed and removed with the engine and box in situ. If its cheap I'll just do it anyway.
