Rear springs
The old van just failed its MOT due to broken rear springs. 1985 1.9DG wbx high top. Should I take this opportunity to lower the van by 30mm or so? Will this make much difference or should I just stick to standard height springs? Thinking of replacing dampers all round at the same time, hoping to im...

Re: Crank (pulley) oil seal
Ok. I'll give it a go. I was worried that I might mangle the old seal only to find that it's a pig getting the new one in. New breather stack seal and oil dipstick seal getting replaced as well.

Crank (pulley) oil seal
I've tried searching the wiki and past posts but cannot find a simple answer to this. Is it possible to replace the crank oil seal at the rear (pulley) with the engine in situ? Or is it a an engine out and strip down job? I aready have the pulley off as I am replacing the water pump and pipes. Howev...

Re: Is my alternator gubbed then?
I got a new 14.5v regulator, but after fitting it there was no difference - still about 13.5v. I have been measuring the voltage from the larger nut at the back of the alternator and eathing it to the engine, which has a nice new earth strap so should be good. The alternator, if not original, is cer...

Is my alternator gubbed then?
The van has only been run occasionally over the winter (couple of times a week). I noticed a few days ago however that the leisure battery appeared to be completely flat and was not getting charged whilst driving. Road battery seemed ok. Checked the charge coming from the alternator and it was about...

Re: PROPEX PROBLEM
Are you sure the battery is good? Propex are very sensitive to a drop in voltage. I can't remember the exact values - anything below 11.5v might be iffy and the unit will behave like you describe. Also if the gas supply. Is blocked, the fan will spin for a few seconds while the burner tries to ignit...

Re: Replacing just one cylider head. Any problems?
The problem is if the cylinder liners get disturbed and need new bottom seals. Then its a fiddly job!

Re: Bromyard VW query
Phoning might be the best bet. But they often have to finish a couple of jobs before getting started on another. Did they give an indication of timescale?

Re: Valves?
Success! A couple of short local journeys with no problems and then an overnight trip to Pitlochry for the Etape Caledonia. The van never missed a beat - I'm really pleased. Fingers crossed it behaves itself now. Just a small job needed now to replace the coolant pressure cap which seems not to work...

Re: Valves?
After a bit of a delay, I got the head off with very little trouble. Nothing obviously amiss. Took it into Engine Resource in Dundee. When the valves were out we could see a distinct black groove in a couple of the valve seats as if it had been badly cut when the head was manufactured (spanish make)...

Re: Valves?
Thanks for the rocker arm advice. I will try that first as I am gutted at the thought of dismantling the engine again.

Re: Valves?
I borrowed a compression guage and checked cylinder compression. There are the values with the engine cold. No 1 - 8.5 bar. No 2 - 8.5 bar. No 3 - 8 bar. No 4 - 0 bar I think there might be a problem with a valve after all. Looks like the cylinder head will have to come off (again). I'm hopeful that...

'puttering' noise seems to be getting much more pronounced, so I'm suspecting the exhaust. A proper examination needed.

Re: Valves?
Right first time about the underfloor tanks. It had two cylindrical tanks that ran parallel to the sills underneath, in addition it had a torroidal tank in the spare wheel mount at the front. The more recent rules for ground clearance rules out the two tanks under the sills. The only part of the sys...

Re: Valves?
Lpg system was removed when we got welding done. Never replaced as it was no longer legal.
Interesting posyts re valves. I'll check exhaust first as that would be the easiest fix.
Cheers
