Brake fade
So, exciting news! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260514/9a3a36af26361bfe6eb8477c274b4692.jpg She drove on the road for the first time in 12 years! Just around the block to see what happened! Nothing spectacular went wrong but the brakes certainly need attention! Start off okay, but getting prop...

Yeah I think this could be my issue. Just got to bit the bullet and empty all that brand new coolant on to the floor!

Re: Coolant issues
Yeah the fan is working grand. I don’t want to dump all my coolant. But yeah, thinking maybe sticking a hose though it and seeing if it comes out the other end!!

Re: Coolant issues
The gate valve all seems to operate externally anyway. Shame you can’t get to where the hose joins the matrix inside the cab, would loosen the hose there and let any trapped air out.

All sorted this morning, only took an hour and was much easier than anticipated!
Thanks for the advice. All bolted back up securely.

Re: Brown wire on steering column
Yeah horn earth, it comes out the other end of that pipe at the bottom of the steering rack behind the rubber boot. Pull it out from the other end, repair/replace and poke it back through the pipe and reconnect.

Re: Two spade connectors on starter
Main spade, the bigger one (terminal 50)is the trigger wire.
The other auxiliary (often terminal 15a or 50b) would be used for things such as a cold start, or a ballast resistor bypass etc.
So just use the bigger one, leave the other disconnected.

A gentle heatgun over the plastics can bring them back to life.

Stripped captive nuts
Out of the four bolts that hold the front gearbox mount to the crossmember, two of the nuts are stripped, the bolts slightly catch then go loose again. I only realised today when I was under my van doing something else and noticed two, on the same side, were loose! Then realised they don’t tighten! ...

I 100% get the “use what you have” theory.
But… what were they thinking!?

Re: What’s missing here?
Really weirdly, for some reason I have an original vw panel which is the inside part of a window van for exactly that place. It has been kicking around the workshop for years. I will check tomorrow to see if I still have it. It may not have the same aperture as your window though but I can send you...

Re: What’s missing here?
Ah, thanks. I’ve got a rusty tailgate, was wondering if I can chop that up to use the window surround. And yes, some small 90’ brackets will do the trick.

What’s missing here?
I got some interior panels for my van, however the panel opposite the sliding door seems to be missing what it attaches to! I’ve always thought the van looks like it’s missing something! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260315/72b35fe5c77325862cb45e925b1ee690.jpg It attached to th pillar here towa...
