Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Got back to UK late last night - van munched the miles in usual bone-jangling roary fashion. Someone tried to jemmy their way into the van after we left it for a few hours in Epernay - the champagne capital! Bent the door frame good and proper - pic attached, and one of van back at camp. Not quite s...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Just got back from picking up the van. It's over a two hour round trip - up to the Col de la Schlutz and down again all through hairpin bends - van loved it. Cedric the mechanic was charming and a bit rueful - as he pointed out the van was built before he was born and they aren't used to these types...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
And with his first touch Sarran scores – and the game is over! Unbelievable. A rotor arm. What can I say. Huge thanks to everyone on this forum - your support has made such a difference - all the suggestions have helped us get this story to a happy ending. And a massive thank you to Sarran - respect...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Crikey - feel like I'm experiencing a soap opera on fast-forward! From despair to elation and back again on the hour every hour. Sarran has been brilliant and is chatting to mechanic, probably right now. I have the doom scenarios all sketched out and ready to implement - but perhaps Sarran can be th...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Thanks Flyingchunk - I see what you mean. Are these breather pipes on the carburettor - or elsewhere? It would be good if I can offer mechanic specific advice. I have a broad grasp of these issues, but lack detail in various places! When I had the old carburettors there were all kinds of pipes in a ...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Thanks all - it is extremely frustrating - when it was 'fixed' it sounded nice - not ticky at all, and apart from the initial lumpiness of not having an automatic choke it drove fine. It actually works - except when this mystery something stops it! At that point it wasn't loaded up at all - no trail...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Here's the update from the mechanic care of google translate: 'We checked the fuel. No water in it. The ignition works well, there is fuel to the pump. This is certainly another mechanical problem (engine)' That's disappointing. Anyone have any thoughts on what engine problem could cause it to cut o...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Sorry for delay - wifi crash - yes number is UK +44 (0)7887 894781 The garage is at 19 Rue d'Agen - Zins garage. We're actually at Gademont - nice campsite in forest with own lake and canoes, fires allowed, great walks in forest. An upside of he whole episode is that we were able to move to a pitch ...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
The van is at Zins garage in Colmar - we are an hour away at a campsite at Gerardmer. My mobile number is 07887 894781. Please call one and all - it will make a pleasant change from companies telling me that I am eligible for compensation on a non-existant insurance policy.

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Thanks oorwullie - it was extraordinarily heavy rain so it wouldn't surprise me if you are right - I am forwarding these suggestions to the mechanic and he is feeding back on them so I think it is helping the process.

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
AdrianC - forgot to answer your question - when it died it was suddenly on all four cylinders. But prior to that it did do a couple of seconds of misfiring. It does seem to clear after a while or as a result of fiddling, as the garage can get it to go enough for them to believe it is fixed - but it ...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
We are camping an hour away from where the van broke down, so don't have ready access to do these tests - but I'll pass on to mechanic - we're communicating via email using google translate which is helping. The fuel pump is apparently OK - he is wondering whether I have put the wrong petrol in. I'm...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
Thanks both - that's excellent - I'll contact Sarran immediately and also pass on the thought about the fuel pump to the garage. I realised last night that my main problem here is the garage - I've ended up as a bit of a hostage, this will help me move things forward. Feeling much more optimistic no...

Re: Stuck in France! Advice for mechanics please
It's getting worse. Buckets of Euros and a week of faffing around later, the van suffers the same failure. 500 metres down the road after being pronounced fixed, it starts to misfire and then makes a 'Phut' sound and cuts out completely. All the electrics are now pristine, - new everything, includin...
