This comes back to the heat riser elbow issue but....

Do I need them if I'm not bothered about heating the van?

What's the minimum exuaust bits needed to run? (Safely)

Heat Riser Elbows, Removal

VW T25 1980 petrol air cooled. I will need to replace the heat riser elbows, how ever I can't see what type of fasteners are holding them in place? Looks like it could be a large Philips drive? It may be wicking in from a different source? A bit off topic but when I was fire alame engineer, I regularly had water damaged detectors, the thourght that the water came down onto the device was normally correct but some times it had ran down the cables to the device.
