To answer the original question, I don’t remember having much trouble getting free from the wishbone, but did similar to what maxstu suggests.. hold the wishbone up with a pry bar and knock the ball joint out with a large hammer.

I’ve recently taken my tank / etc out to replace and was going to ask the same question re: the single run of rubber.
It’s seems to make sense to do this and have less connections.
Have you done yours yet, and which route did you go down?
