To every one,
With a new belt and a fully charged battery all is well in my vanhold.
Thanks a million to you all for your advice during my moment of pure stress; I have learnt things I did not know I needed to learn.
Club 80 90 is a wonderful place I would be lost without it.
Regards
Simon

Re: AAAHHHHHH = hot alternator plea for help
Yes alternators can run over 70 deg As bizarre as this may sound that information has restored a little hope in me. After a long line of 'issues' I thought this would be another nail biter. I'll run some more checks (with a more car savvy mate) with any luck we will get the all clear. Thank you all...

Re: AAAHHHHHH = hot alternator plea for help
It is getting hot very quickly, it should be noted that the battery is flat due to the previous alternator not doing the job. Simon Then that is most likely why. And never run an alternator with the battery disconnected the diodes don't like it. I appreciate it would get hot during big charge momen...

Re: AAAHHHHHH = hot alternator plea for help
Alternators get hot when they are working that's why they have their own fan to keep them cool. The harder they are working the and the slower they are turning the hotter they get. Without us knowing what you where doing before you checked it it could just be normal or a fault with it. I was simply...

Re: AAAHHHHHH = hot alternator plea for help
The battery is also new this year (I seem to be throwing good money after bad)
After running the van for a bit the batt does seem to hold enough residual charge to restart the engine.
When charging from the alternator I was getting approx 13V
If this info is of any use

Re: AAAHHHHHH = hot alternator plea for help
It is a new alternator rather than second hand. The old one's bearings went after an adventure in France resulted in a new belt which was too short (but did get me home) being fitted. The van is a 1.7 diesel. It is getting hot very quickly, it should be noted that the battery is flat due to the prev...

Re: starter spins but does not engage
Well thanks to all of you for your hints and tips.
I tried every one but in the end a new starter was bought and fitted today and she turned over first time.
If any one has the know how and tools to recondition the old one it is free to collect.

Re: starter spins but does not engage
As one half of s & k (didn't for get my log in for this account at all!! ) I can confirm that the battery voltage is currently 12.2v. The voltage across my temporary wire is 12.1v and the voltage via the ignition switch is 11v ish. However, as stated the starter will not engage when direc...

Re: Is October too late?
We tested the capability of ours out in March this year. With a small thermostat controlled fan heater we were absolutely fine.
It helped that there was a pub 5 min away with a roaring open fire and good beer.
