Re: Coachbuilt Base Vehicle Construction Question.
That's good news about their longevity underneath. I've read about and seen photographs of the leaks problems from the upper body, but it doesn't look too bad to pull them apart to fix them.

Re: Post-1985 With Round Headlights.
Don't forget that Wikipedia is made up of lots of well meaning, but often mis-informed contributors  Also an awful lot of the info on vehicles refers to US specs which are different from EU versions. My money's still on the actual variant/trim level of the base vehicle from the factory and the...

Re: Post-1985 With Round Headlights.
Thanks for the replies. :) I didn't know about the square headlight version, unless we're referring to the same thing. When I said rectangular I was referring to the ones with rectangular (outer) headlights which have square (inner) light units mounted right up against them. Regarding the headlight ...

Re: Post-1985 With Round Headlights.
Okay, thanks.
So, it does appear that it's wrong to say post-1985 vehicles had rectangular headlights. If it is wrong then what factor dictated when which type of headlight was fitted?

Post-1985 With Round Headlights.
I was under the impression that post-1985 T3s/T25s should have the later rectangular headlights, but I keep seeing round headlight vehicles with later registration numbers. I've seen two F-registered and two G-registered vans recently, all with round headlights. Am I wrong about the model years invo...

Re: Coachbuilt Base Vehicle Construction Question.
Interesting idea. One of the reasons I was interested in the underside of these conversions is to see how they might be prone to rust - and also to see how difficult it might be to repair them. It looks as if it's much the same as conventional van, with regard to rusting and repairing.

Re: Coachbuilt Base Vehicle Construction Question.
Excellent! Thanks for the details. That answers everything.
I'm quite surprised that there is so much strength in the base chassis, but all credit to VW for that!

Re: 2010 Arctic Circle Bus Meet
I was looking into the best way to get to Tromsø and after going through everything in as much detail as I could, it worked out about £225 cheaper to drive the whole way there via Calais than to drive up to Immingham and get the ferry over to Brevik, and drive the rest of the way up.

Re: Coachbuilt Base Vehicle Construction Question.
I mean monocoque as in being constructed as a single unit and getting its strength from the way it is constructed, as opposed to having a separate self-supporting chassis with an unstressed body on it. Unless I'm seriously mistaken the T3/T25 is of a monocoque construction, and from looking at those...

Re: Coachbuilt Base Vehicle Construction Question.
I was just guessing, based on that rather unclear last photograph. The dark dotted lines look as if they could be the gaps between short weld runs and I'm guessing that box sections would be good candidates for a strengthening members. If they're starting with a cut-down (or never built up in the fi...

Re: Coachbuilt Base Vehicle Construction Question.
Hmmm, just been having a look at the photographs again. It would be interesting to find out what they did to the base chassis to strengthen it. Looking at the bottom photograph it looks as it there might be lengths of box section tacked on.

Coachbuilt Base Vehicle Construction Question.
Just another camper-related question! I'm curious to know how the coachbuilt campers (Gipsy and Cheetah etc) are constructed underneath the coachbuilt body. Considering that the original vehicle is of a monocoque construction, is there a severely cut-down panel van lower body underneath the coachbui...
