Re: Rear main oil seal 1.6TD 1989 JX
They're saying they did replace the seal but apparently "these engine's are prone to it becuase they don't create a vacuum in the crankcase so are always under pressure". It was less than 18 months and under 8,000 miles ago that it was supposedly replaced - surely not every owner of one of...

Re: Fuel filter 1989 1.6TD (JX)
Thanks for the helpful replies. Let me get things right, when fitting the new filter I need to attach the fuel inlet pipe and the plastic clip on arrangement, then run the engine until fuel spills from the filter outlet. At which point I push the outlet pipe on before cutting the engine again. Does ...

Rear main oil seal 1.6TD 1989 JX
Quick bit of advice needed before mechanic rings back! Early last year I had a complete engine overhaul, new clutch etc. Had a few teething problems at the time (to say the least!). Now I'm being told (by the same mechanic) that the rear main oil seal is what's causing the oil leak that's been buggi...

Fuel filter 1989 1.6TD (JX)
Never changed a fuel filter before! The 'pocket mechanic' manual I've got shows a different filter to the one on my van. For illustration see the manual diagram ( http://www.twitpic.com/d0k0n ) and a picture of my filter ( http://www.twitpic.com/d0jth ). The difference is that there's no bleed screw...

Re: And now the Exhaust...
I'm in the middle of replacing the silencer on my 1989 1.6TD - see ebay for the one I've got: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=190316263288" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I'm having trouble removing the lower bolt on the ...

'Lewannack Dip' - that rings a bell. Just glad I haven't had a barrage of replies about negative experiences. Might go to Norfolk next time, much flatter!

Re: Dreading the big dipper - A30 Cornwall
It seems I'm getting my hills mixed up, and I'm meant to be some kind of Geographer! It's the one on the A30 with 4 lanes and cameras at the bottom to clock ya when you're trying to get up some speed. I do feel reassured (esp. by Paul & Alice's comments), the van does ~55mph on steep motorway se...

Dreading the big dipper - A30 Cornwall
Hi all, Planning a trip to deepest Cornwall in August. Trouble is I know that my '89 1.6 TD Transporter is really gonna struggle to make it over the 'big dipper' (you might know it, on the A30 near Cambourne). It's like a 1:1 gradient! My old Astra used to struggle up it for god's sake! Any tips on ...

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!
Great thread - just what I needed! Right, I've read the Wiki and read most of this thread. Made some notes as I've gone along. My 1989 Transporter was brush/roller painted with Hammerite-like "army standard" dark green paint by the previous ownder - It's not bad really, although quite oran...
