Simon Baxter,

Vw produced the beetle, this was known as Type 1. VW then produced a van, this was called a type 2. VW then produced a range of cars on the same floor pan, one being a saloon (NotchBack) a coupe (Notchback) and an estate (Squareback) this was the third model to be produced by VW and was called a type 3. VW then went on to make a fugly sales disaster called a 411 or 412, whcih was called a type 4.

All VW's have a "Type number" which is VW speak for a model designation, some made it into production, others didn't.

So, VW when they released the bay window they carried on with the type 2 name to designate the vans from the rest of the range and they also did when the wedge came out too, so Splits, Bays and wedges are all type 2's. There is plenty of information around on the internet about Type 2 model types.. At some point, obviosly VW needed more type numbers for their growing range and at present type numbers are 6 digits long, as the Wedge ones are, the first 3 are of any use and most of the wedge ones start with 25, but not all, the pick up and double cab pick up type numbers start with 24 thats why it is nonsensicle for the general term for a wedge to be a T25 or Type25 as that term doesn't encompass the whole line up, plus it's bollocks as we said earlier, a split fire truck is a type 25.

The germans being the sensible lot that they are bored with all the confusion decided to call them by their range, so the first range or generation became T1, or Transporter1 (Split), then T2 for Transporter 2 (Bay Window), T3 for Transporter 3 (Wedge) T4 for Transporter4 and T5 for T5, it's easy so long as your not stupid enough to get your T's and your types mixed up.

T3 is a general term that everyone else in the world uses to cover all models. (except the stupid brits) T25 is the 25th generation of transporter if you use the logic that everyone else does. Type 25 is a split fire truck. Working on the same bollocks logic then a wedge pick up would be a type 24 which is in actual fact a delux microbus (samba)

This T thing isn't just reserved for vans, the golf boys in the rest of Europe call a MKI Golf a G1, a MKII golf a G2 etc etc...

It all makes sense and does away with confusion, and is a lot more logical.

What f**ks the system up is when VW go and shorten type 2 to T2 on thir ETKA programme! they also shorten type 3 to T3 and make a right bollocks of it, luckily the people who did their next parts programme, ETOS they are called a type 2 again, which is nice.

Call them what you will, I will call them a T3, it makes sense.
