The figures, according to my drivers manual (1991) are:

200 mm for diesels
290 mm for petrol injection engines
350 mm for carburreted engines

I am thinking of putting the air filter in the bottom of the wardrobe if I ever get around to reconnecting the charge cooler. I have been collecting a few manuals over the last couple of months and I have the sales brochure from a 1.9 petrol syncro. It gives quite a bit of technical data,

Fording Depth= 350mm (~13 3/4")
Hill climbing ability with full load 185 r 14 c tyres 54%
205 r 14 c tyres 60%
Approach/Depart angle= 22/19*
Turning circle= 10.9m (35' 9")
etc etc.....
