4X4 systems explained:

Russel: Winching Well where do u start.

You shouldnt run an electric winch for more than 30 sec. at max. load pull then leave for a time to cool eg. 10 mins.

Now any competent wincher should be out of your hole in less than that and any competent driver should'nt be stuck and setup to power up your winch within the cool off perioud.

Mounting a winch under your skid plate is a very stupid idea!

When axle deep and you need it you will usually first have to dig to find it. It will get very messy and quikly submerged in water. Difficult access to clean and maintain. And the biggest concern is you can't see it spooling (winding on). If you cross ure cable you pinch it. This can damage it and if not detected can be very dangerous.

What size? I would'nt use anything with less than a 4 ton line pull on first wind. You will loose power the more windings you have on the spool.

Warn XD9000 or XD9000i is a good bet.

You can use smaller but u will have to use a snatch block to increase the pull but this will halve ure line speed.

A power steering pump wont quite deliver either. You will need to stick to the manufacturer's spec.

Most important is: A winch is not a toy and people get seriously injured when misusing them. Know your equipment and its capabilities, check and maintain at regular intervals.

Thats quite enough for now.
