Caravelle headrests can be retro fitted to VW rear seats - typically you might want to add headrests as a safety feature to a multivan bed seat. The headrest is removed by first pulling out the clip that locks the headrest at each height step. This clip simply slides out sideways - pull with a small screwdriver or pliers. The lift out the headrest. The guides are made of plastic and are pressed into the top of the seat. The bottom of the guides have a set of 4 clips that lock the bottom of the guide into a horizontal rail in the seat. The parts can be seen in the photo below.

To remove the guides use two wide levers and make sure you get them under the top of the guide head. See photo below. I used screwdriver head to add leverage.
HINT: I sprayed WD40 down the tubes to help release the clip at the bottom. A sharp push down on the levers is needed to spring them out of the locked position.
(NOTE: If you snap one, don't worry VW still have some (Jan 2008) Part number for the seat insert is 811 881 939 01C (Black ones) and the cost is £3.89 +VAT)

To fit into the new seat use your finger to locate the dimple where the hole is under the cloth on the top of the seat.
If you can't find a dimple, then you might not have a VW original seat! Carefully cut a small hole through the cloth and foam underneath.

Carefully widen the hole to allow the guide to slip in.

HINT: You might need to turn the guide as it has "wings" which only fit through the rail in the seat in one direction.
Give a firm press to lock the guide foot into position - the top should be just below the fabric level.

And here is the final result - HINT: If you are adding the headrests to a bed seat, remember to keep a small screwdriver handy to release the clips so you can remove the headrests when turning the seat into a bed!
