Fitting
Firstly remove the circlip and pin from the check rod.
Remove the 4 hinge bolts with someone taking the weight of the door. Remove the old seal and clean out the gully of any glue or flaking paint (I used a small nylon brush and a flat screwdriver).
Run the tape around the gully marking the clip holes in the door. (If you can do this in one piece it will make life easier when you come to fitting the seal). I then ran another piece of tape around the door that will hold the side of the seal (as per photo). This may be overkill but I had bought a 10m roll for each door and it really secured the seal. Mark the beginning of the tape for later.
I lined up the holes in the seal with the holes in the door so I began inserting the seal in the correct place.
Insert the clips in the seal, remove the tape covering and fit the seal. Slowly remove the tape covering as you work your way around the door inserting the seal. At this stage do not remove the covering for the second piece of tape you ran around the door. I found that the round end of a wooden spoon helpful in working the seal into the door.
With the seal in find the beginning of the second piece of tape and start to remove the covering. This came off easily even with the door seal against it.
Go around the door again pressing the seal against the second piece of tape. Get someone to hold the door while you refit it.
Replace the door gasket (when I ordered these from VW I was told I had got the last pair and production has stopped, so they now be obsolete)
Replace the pin and circlip and rub a small amount of grease on the check rod. Done job.
