I wanted to get my head around this so I did a bit of digging in the fuse box head scratching in Bentley and the Westfalia diagrams and with a lot of help off the forum (thanks Bigherb) this is my understanding how the charging system works on a Westy. Note the leisure relay 'earth' is cancelled out by the positive feed from the ignition this means the relay is fed 2 positive feeds to the switched side during cranking so the relay doesn't engage and the Leisure doesn't sap current during engine starting. The alternator charge light wont go out until the engine is rotating anyway so one view is that it can be wired directly to the earth on the leisure battery. If your leisure battery is heavily discharged/cold day/ engine hard to start it could make the difference between getting the engine started and getting out the jump leads.
