battery terminals

morning everyone, just noticed the earth terminal on my leisure battery is covered in a white crusty powder but my starter battery isnt, ive seen this on batteries before but wondering why only the leisure battery is suffering from this, any ideas ? cheers jeff

Morning :)

It's likely just to do with what metal is used in the connector and it's reaction to the lead of the terminal. The white stuff is lead sulphate, take care it is a bit corrosive, but not dangerously so, just don't get it in your eyes and wash your hands.

Clean it off with water (off the van, not in the tray) and when all back together rub Vaseline all over it (oh er missus) this keeps the air out so the chemical reaction cannot take place.

If you haven't any Vaseline, there are plenty on here with some :lol:

Don't use just plain water for washing it off - you will just transfer the acid to somewhere else - make a solution of baking soda and water and spray it on, keep applying until it fizzes no more - the acid is then neutralized.
