Change of Engine from Early Type to Later Type

Hi
Not sure I introduced myself very well the last time I used this site. so here goes: My name is Dave and I live in Cyprus with my wife Ann. We had our VW Transporter Type25 Camper shipped over to Cyprus when we moved here. Unfortunately not had a great deal of use over the last three years due to various problems, the latest being a replacement engine.

Apparently I have brought a 'Later' DG 1.9 Engine to replace my' Early' DG 1.9 Engine. I have checked the Topics on this site and downloaded the diagram of a Later engine cooling system, but still not sure how to connect up to my existing cooling system etc.

I guess what I'm looking for is a really basic idiots guide to what goes where from the point where the large water pipes come through the bulk head into the engine bay, and eventually back to the radiator along the same route.

My water temperature sender is currently on the side of the thermostat with a single wire going to it. I assume it is now the twin spade connector in the blue tube at the base of the thermostat housing that is now along side the flywheel.

Then theres the Idle Cut Off Valve wire that is connected to the brass fitting to the left hand side of the distributer cap. Not sure where this goes with the later engine set up.

There will no doubt be other areas not spotted yet, so as much information as possible will be much appreciated.
I am travelling back to the UK in the next week which would be a good opportunity to buy any parts required to connect everything up

Thanks
Cyprus Dave

From my limited knowledge I was always under the impression that both coolant systems fit all petrol engines regardless of age?

indeed
use your old system if it is in good order,
my mate used his '83 system to cool an '89 2.1 DJ and put a carb on.

been working just fine for the last 5 years :ok

Thank's for your replies Cruz and Kevtherev. Been and had another look at both engines. So now can I make sure I have got this right please;

I transfer the water pump/thermostat from my early engine to the later engine. (now the flow and return pipes can be reused, and the pipe work on top of the engine remains in place + electrical connectors.

Remove the thermostat from the late engine and connect the water pipe to the rear of the engine, using the flange from my early engine
The rest pretty much falls in to place, I hope!!!
