Head Gasket Replacement 1.6CS
Posted: 27 Mar 2012, 20:58
Hi
Vehicle and brief history......1982 devon moonraker - 1.6cs - 135000miles - engine was reconditioned by main dealer about 40000 miles ago inc head gasket
Symptoms and
popped a hose twice in 2 weeks - over pressuring the system - old thermostat was lazy and didnt open until 95degrees when tested - removed old stat and ran without one for a few days - still losing coolant thru cap - did a pressure test on systemwith stant tester last night and at 1 bar found a couple of leaks which tightening hose clips cured -
new thermostat fitted today and system re-bled
no oil in water or vice versa but sometimes noticed white froth in coolant - not oily and clears.
Fearing leaking head gasket or warped/cracked head
May have to undertake this job soon if the van wont respond to the cheaper fixes currently underway (new thermostat / pressure cap / properly bleed system / flush and reverse flush the rad
Has anyone here done this job - easy ? tricky ? any hints n tips ?
A local brighton based vw specialist garage gave estimate of £350 inc cam belt and assuming old head is ok
Any advice welcome
Thanks
